South African Church attacked For Refusing To Bury Church Members Who Owe Them Money

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa has been slammed for refusing to bury people who owe it money, South Africa’s Sowetan newspaper reports. A body investigating the commercialisation of churches, the Commission for the Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Communities (CRL) lambasted the church for “punishing the poor”.

This comes after complaints from people about the card system – where congregants pay a monthly fee to the church. But the Methodist Church, one of the biggest in Africa, said that was aimed at encouraging people to give.
